The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is probably the most iconic of all Allied bombers of WWII. Aptly named, the Flying Fortress was known to absorb tremendous battle damage and still be able to limp home from a mission missing entire pieces of its airframe. The B-17’s primary mission was daylight bombing raids deep into German territory to strike at the heart of Hitler’s war industry. One third of all munitions dropped on Germany during WWII were dropped by B-17s.
