This is the Collings Foundation’s B-24J Liberator. It was photographed at sunset at the Deer Valley Airport in Phoenix during a static display there. This B-24J is the only restored and flying example in existence.
The Consolidated B-24 saw extensive service in the WWII European theater. The B-24 had a higher top speed, greater range, and a greater pay-load than the more well known B-17, but it was harder to pilot and didn’t take battle damage well. The B-24’s most infamous mission was the low-level strike against the Ploesti oil fields, in Romania on 1 August 1943, which was a disaster for the attacking force of B-24’s because the enemy was underestimated, and alerted to the attack which was disorganized and poorly planned.
Visit the Collings Foundation’s web site or the B-24’s Wikipedia Page for more information about the aircraft.
